Environmental Modification

Some behavioral problems may be related to either the physical or social environment of the dementia sufferer. Interventions that modify the environment can impact these undesirable behaviors.

The goal of environmental modification is to provide a predictable, daily routine, support independent functioning, reduce stress and compensate for impairment. Such interventions can include increasing personal space and reducing stimuli such as noise or social interactions with others.

The social environment can be modified by the use of such interventions as pet therapy, or recreational activities that encourage the person to interact with his or her surroundings, like gardening, or caring for animals that live on the premises.

Disclaimer: Always seek the advice of a physician or other health care provider when considering an intervention. Many of these interventions can only be done by trained professionals.
