About Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)
A commonly-used definition of EBM is taken from David Sackett: EBM is "the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research." Sackett, D. Evidence-based Medicine - What it is and what it isn't. http://cebm.jr2.ox.ac.uk/ebmisisnt.html.

For more information on Evidence-Based Medicine see the UNC-CH Health Sciences Library's Tutorial Introduction to Evidence-Based Medicine.

Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Library consists of four databases:
  • Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews (CLSR) provides access to regularly updated, systematic reviews, maintained by the various Cochrane Review Groups.

  • Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE), includes structured abstracts of systematic reviews from around the world, which have been critically appraised by reviewers at the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York, England. Systematic reviews are identified from a variety of sources and assessed according to a set of quality criteria. For good quality reviews, detailed structured abstract describing the methodology, results and conclusions are produced. Comments on the overall quality of reviews and their implications for health care are also included.

  • Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCTR), a database of controlled trials identified by the Cochrane Review Groups. Most of these are in MEDLINE, but often difficult to locate.

  • Cochrane Review Methodology Database (CRMD) provides a bibliography of articles and books on the science of research synthesis.

ACP Journal Club (Journal)
ACP Journal Club's general purpose is to select published articles according to explicit criteria and to abstract those studies and reviews that warrant immediate attention by physicians attempting to keep pace with important advances in the treatment, prevention, diagnosis, cause, prognosis, or economics of the disorders managed by internists. These articles are summarized in "value-added" abstracts and commented on by clinical experts. For more information and access to some of the article reviews, see ACP-ASIM Online: http://www.acponline.org/journals/acpjc/jcmenu.htm

Evidence-Based Medicine (Journal)
The purpose of Evidence-Based Medicine (published by BMJ) is to alert clinicians to important advances in internal medicine, general and family practice, surgery, psychiatry, pediatrics, and obstetrics & gynecology by selecting from the biomedical literature those original and review articles whose results are most likely to be both true and useful. These articles are summarized in value-added abstracts and commented on by clinical experts. For more information and access to some of the article reviews, see ACP-ASIM Online or Evidence-based Medicine at: http://www.acponline.org/journals/ebm/pastiss.htm

Best Evidence (Database)
Best Evidence is a database that indexes article reviews from the ACP Journal Club and Evidence-Based Medicine. The editors of these journals screen the top clinical journals on a regular basis and identify studies that are both methodologically sound and clinically relevant. They write an enhanced abstract of the chosen article and provide a commentary on the value of the study for clinical practice.
